Why We Should Care About Palestine
That Israel acts with such unbelievable cruelty, and massacres innocent civilians with such ferocity and vengeance, shamelessly bombing schools, hospitals and residential apartment buildings full of women and children and even UN designated schools housing mostly children, after being told 17 times by UN staff not to bomb it because it’s sheltering children, can only mean one thing: frustration, fear and desperation, eating at the very heart of the Zionist experiment and threatening to blow out of water their “promised” Jewish-only state, that was to be built and maintained through ethnic cleansing and mass murder. Israeli leaders see and feel that the future isn’t promising for them, despite an unlimited and unconditional military, financial, economic and diplomatic support from the super power, and despite all the killings, evictions, home demolitions and massacres. With every such campaign of extermination, as we’re now witnessing in Gaza, their hope for the apartheid state seems to get even more untenable and makes them even more mad, crazy and desperate.
What we’re witnessing in Gaza is the actions of an extremely frustrated, enraged, deranged and crazed, and at the same time, desperate psychopathic gang of war criminals, intent on exterminating the Palestinian people. Not only have they demonstrated that intention through their actions, but some of the leaders and politicians of the Zionist state have even said so, in no uncertain terms. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing for Israel to be formally defined as “the nation state of one people only – the Jewish people – and of no other people.” Ayelet Shaked, a Knesset member from the Jewish Home Party, which is one of the ruling coalition parties, posted about Palestinians: “They are all enemy combatants, and their blood shall be on all their hands. Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow their sons, nothing would be more just. They should go, as should the physical homes in which they raised the snakes. Otherwise, more little snakes will be raised there.” Another member of the Knesset, Moshe Feiglin, wrote in an online editorial a seven step “solution” (probably was thinking “Final Solution”, though he didn’t say it) for Gaza, in which he said the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) must attack Gaza “with no consideration for ‘human shields’ or ‘environmental damage’”. He added: “Gaza is part of our land and we will remain there forever. Liberation of parts of our land forever is the only think that justifies endangering our soldiers in battle for capturing land. Subsequent to the elimination of terror from Gaza, it will become part of sovereign Israel and will be populated by Jews.” Ethnic cleansing, he added would “also serve to ease the housing crisis in Israel” and that “the coastal train line will be extended, as soon as possible, to reach the entire length of Gaza.”
Those who are shocked at the barbarity and brutality displayed by the Israeli forces are shocked because they don’t know the mindset of the Israelis. Speaking of the mindset, it’s been reported that 85% of the Israelis support the actions of Prime Minister Netanyahu. Professor David Shulman, who teaches at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, wrote on July 12 that “Israel has witnessed a wave of racist hatred on a scale perhaps not known before.” He went on to describe “Israeli lynch gangs prowling the streets of downtown Jerusalem and organized Fascist groups attacking any Palestinians unlucky enough to be going home late at night, after work.” There have been many reports of such attacks. In a recent post, I saw a series of photos showing a group of settlers attacking some Palestinian children, who were found playing with bubbles. When the occupation soldiers arrived, the children were detained and interrogated for about 8 hours, before they were let go. In the photo below, a Palestinian woman can be seen being attacked by settlers, who grabbed and removed her head scarf.
These sentiments are top-down and prevalent on all levels, especially among the police and the occupation soldiers. Typically, settlers or racist gangs attack Palestinians and when the security forces arrive, it’s the Palestinians who get detained and interrogated and sometimes jailed. The police beating of the American teenage boy of Palestinian origin that made it into the US media was presented as an isolated case, but it was anything but.
The frustration and fear of not being able to materialize a pure Jewish-only state has driven them to go for complete extermination. This is what they’re after and this is what they try to do. The issue of Hamas rockets and tunnels, and the “security needs” of Israel are all excuses. Time and again, ever since the inception of this racist and segregationist state, Israel has used a variety of pretexts to wage massive military assaults on the unprotected Palestinian population, each time killing well over a thousand people, including several hundred children, with total impunity. US officials who cry foul and rush to impose crippling sanctions or even military intervention when a government that’s considered “unfriendly” kills a handful of its opponents, all express their unequivocal and unconditional support for the Zionist state that’s killing some 1,400 defenseless people. This and only this unconditional support of the US is why this blatant ethnic cleansing and genocide has gone on for so long. Time and again, member governments, under pressure from their outraged population, raise the issue at the UN and every time, the US stops and prevents even as much as a simple condemnation by the UN over the massacres, war crimes, blatant violations of international laws and ethnic cleansing – actions that are all against every point and every clause of every treaty and pact that UN members, including the US is signatory to. The US government – president after president and Congress after Congress – has been a partner to and enabler of this genocide.
When the Brazilian government recalled its envoy to Israel on Wednesday and condemned the massacre of innocent civilians, the Zionist entity replied by calling them a “diplomatic dwarf”. What they meant by that was that Brazil had aligned itself, not with diplomatic giants like the US and the European Union, but with Russia, China, India and the rest of the Latin America. The gang of governments, from Washington to Brussels, that Israel relies on to continue its genocide only has one long term objective, which it pursues with all means and at any cost, including nudging and provoking Russia into a war: to achieve and maintain a total world hegemony, in order to enrich their multinational corporations from banks to oil and gas companies to weapons manufacturers, among others, that are causing wars, massacres, economic devastation, and genocide. That’s what Israel is counting on: the continuation of this state of affairs. And that’s nothing new. Israel knew whom to rely on and wager its future on since its inception. It was the only state aiding and supporting the apartheid South Africa, openly, including by transferring fighter jets and tanks and other heavy equipment to the regime, even at a time when the US was under pressure to shun it. It has supported all imperialist wars, including the wars in Iraq war and Libya, the coup in Ukraine, the devastation of Syria and has been a staunch proponent of war with Iran. It has committed numerous assassinations of leftists and progressives in neighboring countries and has supported the most right wing regimes in Latin America in the 1980’s. Israel knows its future is tied to the success of world imperialism and its endless wars against nationalist and anti-imperialist states. Israel knows who their friends and foes are and so should we.
The future of the peoples of the world and our hope to achieve peace and economic and social justice and overcome poverty, frequent economic crises and the tyranny of the empire that goes to endless wars to expand and maintain its world domination for giant corporations, is inextricably tied with the fate of the Palestinian people who are fighting for their lives. While we, the people of the world, all pay the price for the takeover of the world by the terrorist gang of governments from Washington to Brussels, the brunt and the sharpest edge of imperialist sword is on the throat of the Palestinian people. Their fight is ours and ours theirs. The difference is that their slaughter is now, ours not yet. Our struggle starts now by our unconditional support of the Palestinians’ struggle for liberation and self-determination.
